Welcome to Maui, a beautiful island in Hawaii. Many people love to come here because it has amazing beaches (obviously), lots of sea life (hello Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles & Humpback whales), and different types of landscapes (beach, mountains, rainforest, and volcanoes!). If you are trying to plan that perfect 5-day trip to Maui, I hope this helps you get an idea of the best things to do! I spent 6 months in Maui and still felt like there was more to see and do, so you won’t do it all in a 5 day trip, but you can definitely get a taste of the magic of this island. As always, remember to be open to the island experience and leave your expectations at home. Maui may just be the best place on earth.

Maui is a special place because it has many different kinds of beauty. You can find some of the best beaches in the world here. Whether you want to relax in the sun, play in the water, or just have a peaceful time, Maui's beaches have it all. From the yellow sands of Ka'anapali Beach to the hidden places along the Hana Highway, you'll find your own special place.
But Maui is not just about the beach. It's a great place for people who love adventure and nature. You can see amazing sea animals here, like sea turtles and humpback whales. If you like snorkeling, you can swim with sea turtles, and during whale season, you can watch big humpback whales jump out of the water. And if you like exploring the underwater world, there are colorful coral reefs full of tropical fish to discover. Maui takes care of its ocean animals and the environment.
Away from the shore, there are different types of places to visit on Maui. Haleakalā National Park is huge at 34,954 acres that encompass the giant shield volcano. You can go to the top of the mountain and watch the sunrise. It's an incredible sight to see the first light of day from up the “House of the Sun”.

Day 1: Exploring South Maui
A. Arrival at Kahului Airport and Drive to Your Accommodation
Your Maui adventure begins as you step off the plane at Kahului Airport. After landing, you'll want to pick up any rental car you've arranged in advance, as having your own transportation is convenient for exploring the island. If you haven't booked a rental car, you can also consider taking a taxi or shuttle to your accommodation.
If you prefer not to drive on vacation, that’s okay, I get it. You can easily organize tours to take to the places in this itinerary.
From Kahului Airport, it's about a 30-minute drive to the popular areas of Kihei and Wailea in South Maui. These areas offer a range of accommodation options, from cozy condos to luxurious resorts, ensuring you'll find the perfect place to call home during your stay. B. Beach Time: Choose Your Slice of Paradise

Here are a few options:
Kamaole Beaches (1, 2, and 3): These three adjacent beaches in Kihei are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Each beach has its unique charm, so feel free to explore them all.
Wailea Beach: Located in the upscale Wailea area, this beach is renowned for its golden sands and clear waters. It's a great place to relax and soak up the sun.
Ulua Beach: Just south of Wailea Beach, Ulua Beach offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, making it a great spot to encounter marine life.
Keawakapu Beach: This long sandy stretch is ideal for a leisurely walk along the shoreline or a refreshing dip in the ocean.
Makena Beach (Big Beach): If you're looking for a stunning, undeveloped beach, Makena Beach, also known as Big Beach, is worth a visit. Please note that the waves can be powerful, so it's not recommended for swimming when conditions are rough.

As the sun rises over the beautiful island of Maui, get ready for a day filled with underwater wonders. Maui's marine life is a major highlight of any visit, and today, you'll have the chance to get up close and personal with some of its most incredible residents.
B. Morning Snorkel Tour to Molokini Crater & Turtle Town (With a Dash of Whale Watching)
Molokini Crater: After a hearty breakfast, it's time to set sail for one of Maui's most famous snorkeling spots: Molokini Crater. This crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater is a haven for marine life, boasting crystal-clear waters and a stunning underwater landscape. On your snorkel tour, you'll have the opportunity to explore the vibrant coral reefs and swim among schools of tropical fish that call this unique ecosystem home.

Day 3: Haleakalā Adventure
A. Journey to the Top
Today, we're heading up a big volcano called Haleakalā. It's not an active volcano, so don't worry about any eruptions. The name Haleakalā means "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian, and it's a special place for watching the sunrise.
Sunrise at Haleakalā (Early Start Needed): To see the sunrise, you'll have to wake up very early, around 3:30 AM. The drive from Kihei to the summit takes about one and a half hours, so plan ahead.
Many people want to see the sunrise, so it's a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time. When you reach the top, you'll watch the sun come up, painting the sky with beautiful colors. It's a magical sight and worth the early wakeup.
Exploring Haleakalā After Breakfast: If you're not a morning person, that's okay! You can visit Haleakalā later in the day. After a relaxed breakfast, make your way up to the summit. From there, you'll have amazing views of the island.
B. Hiking and Food
Once you're at the summit, you have a few choices for what to do:
Go Hiking: Haleakalā National Park has different hiking trails for all skill levels. These trails take you through some really unique landscapes, including the stunning Haleakalā Crater. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks, and carry water because there aren't any places to buy food in the park.
Lunch or Dinner at Kula Bistro: Depending on how long your hike is and how hungry you are, you can eat at Kula Bistro on your drive back to South Maui. It's a nice place to have a meal and is well-known for its good food.
C. Bring Snacks
No matter when you go to Haleakalā, it's a good idea to bring some snacks for the car ride and your hike. There aren't any food places inside the park, so having snacks with you will keep you energized during your adventure.
As you explore Haleakalā and see its incredible landscapes, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for Maui's unique beauty. From lush forests to the rocky summit, Maui's diverse scenery will amaze you.

Day 4: Hana Highway Road Trip
A. Check Out of Your South Maui Accommodation
Before embarking on your exciting Hana Highway road trip, it's time to check out of your South Maui accommodation. Make sure you've packed all your belongings and are ready for a day of exploration along this iconic route. If you always have the option of doing this tour in one day and not staying overnight. It is a long day, but it’s your vacation so I am putting that option out there! If you are travelling with younger kids, I suggest staying overnight in Hana.
B. Journey Along the Famous Road to Hana
Introduction to the Famous Road to Hana: Today, you're in for an adventure as you hit the famous Road to Hana. This legendary highway takes you on a scenic journey through lush rainforests, along rugged coastlines, and to some of Maui's most captivating scenery.
If you are driving yourself, you can consider picking up a packed picnic lunch for the drive from the Hana Headquarters in Paia.
B. Recommended Stops along Hana Highway
Get ready to discover some incredible places along the way:
Hookipa Lookout to View Sea Turtles: Your first stop is the Hookipa Lookout, where you can often spot sea turtles basking on the beach. These graceful creatures are a delight to watch as they relax in the sun.
Twin Falls: A short hike will lead you to Twin Falls, a pair of picturesque waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery. It's a refreshing spot to cool off and take in the natural beauty.
Garden of Eden: This is a great spot to have a picnic lunch. There are walking trails, look out spots, and all of the plant species are labelled so it is truly educational. Also, if you are a Jurassic Park fan, you will love the opportunity to see where the opening scene was filmed (when the helicopter flies to the island). There is an entry fee, but I found it to be worth the money and great place to stop.
Wai'anapanapa State Park: This stunning park offers a black sand beach, volcanic caves, and a captivating coastline. Explore the lava tubes, take a dip in the ocean, and revel in the unique landscapes. You need a reservation to enter the state park.
Hana Lava Tube: Explore the fascinating underground world of the Hana Lava Tube. Walk through these ancient tunnels and learn about the island's geological history.
C. Overnight Stay in Hana at the Hana Maui Resort
After a day of exploration along the Hana Highway, it's time to unwind and rest your weary feet. Check into the Hana Maui Resort for a comfortable overnight stay. This serene retreat in Hana offers a peaceful atmosphere and a chance to experience the quieter side of Maui.
Day 5: Exploring East Maui
A. Breakfast in Hana
Start your day with a delicious breakfast in Hana. Fuel up for more adventures as you plan your route back to Kahului.
B. Choosing Your Return Route
The Same Route (Out and Back): You can choose to take the same route back to Kahului that you took to get to Hana. It's a familiar path with all the breathtaking sights you enjoyed on the way there.
The "Back Way" in a Loop around Haleakalā: Another option is to take the "back way" in a loop around the Haleakalā volcano. However, be aware that this route is a local road and not as well maintained. It can be narrow and challenging for less confident drivers.
2. Haleakalā National Park, Pipiwai Trail, and Bamboo Forest
If you opt for the "back way," you'll have the opportunity to explore Haleakalā National Park and hike the enchanting Pipiwai Trail on the way. If you decide on the out and back, you can still head to the Pipiwai trail, it is not until after the entrance to this trail that the road is considered the “back road”. This trail takes you through a lush bamboo forest and leads to the magnificent Waimoku Falls. It's a nature lover's paradise and offers stunning photo opportunities. C. Dinner in Paia or Head Straight to the Airport
After your day of exploration, you can enjoy dinner in the charming town of Paia or head straight to the airport if your flight schedule requires it.
D. Overnight Stay in Paia or Kahului (Depending on Flight Schedule)
If your flight is the next day, consider staying overnight in Paia or Kahului. This will allow you to relax and reflect on your incredible Maui adventure before departing for your next destination.

Spring (April to May) and Fall (September to November): These shoulder seasons offer a nice balance between good weather and fewer crowds.
B. Renting a Car vs. Using Public Transportation
Having a rental car on Maui provides flexibility and allows you to explore the island at your own pace. While public transportation is available, it may not be as convenient for reaching remote or less touristy spots. If you plan to venture beyond the main tourist areas, renting a car is recommended. If you don't want to drive, you can take tours or hire a private guide to drive you to Hana & Haleakala. If you don't love to drive in the first place, this may offer you more opportunities to relax on your holiday.
