See this content in the original post

Welcome to Maui, a beautiful island in Hawaii. Many people love to come here because it has amazing beaches (obviously), lots of sea life (hello Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles & Humpback whales), and different types of landscapes (beach, mountains, rainforest, and volcanoes!). If you are trying to plan that perfect 5-day trip to Maui, I hope this helps you get an idea of the best things to do! I spent 6 months in Maui and still felt like there was more to see and do, so you won’t do it all in a 5 day trip, but you can definitely get a taste of the magic of this island. As always, remember to be open to the island experience and leave your expectations at home. Maui may just be the best place on earth.

The Beauty of Maui

Maui is a special place because it has many different kinds of beauty. You can find some of the best beaches in the world here. Whether you want to relax in the sun, play in the water, or just have a peaceful time, Maui's beaches have it all. From the yellow sands of Ka'anapali Beach to the hidden places along the Hana Highway, you'll find your own special place.

But Maui is not just about the beach. It's a great place for people who love adventure and nature. You can see amazing sea animals here, like sea turtles and humpback whales. If you like snorkeling, you can swim with sea turtles, and during whale season, you can watch big humpback whales jump out of the water. And if you like exploring the underwater world, there are colorful coral reefs full of tropical fish to discover. Maui takes care of its ocean animals and the environment.

Away from the shore, there are different types of places to visit on Maui. Haleakalā National Park is huge at 34,954 acres that encompass the giant shield volcano. You can go to the top of the mountain and watch the sunrise. It's an incredible sight to see the first light of day from up the “House of the Sun”.

Making the Most of Your Maui Trip

Now, as you plan your trip to Maui, you might wonder how to organize your time. That's what I’m here for! The goal of this 5-day plan is to help you make the most of your Maui vacation.

Below you'll find a detailed plan for each day of your trip. Each day will show you something different about the island, so you can enjoy its beauty, landscapes, and adventures at a relaxed pace.

Our aim is to give you a complete Maui experience, one that has a mix of relaxation and adventure, and includes time to enjoy the island's beauty and culture. Whether you've been to Maui before or it's your first visit, this plan has something for everyone.

Get ready to have a great time in Maui, where every morning and evening is beautiful, every meal is delicious, and every day is a chance to make special memories. Your perfect Maui vacation starts here, with a simple 5-day plan to explore this amazing place.

Day 1: Exploring South Maui

A. Arrival at Kahului Airport and Drive to Your Accommodation

Your Maui adventure begins as you step off the plane at Kahului Airport. After landing, you'll want to pick up any rental car you've arranged in advance, as having your own transportation is convenient for exploring the island. If you haven't booked a rental car, you can also consider taking a taxi or shuttle to your accommodation.

If you prefer not to drive on vacation, that’s okay, I get it. You can easily organize tours to take to the places in this itinerary.

From Kahului Airport, it's about a 30-minute drive to the popular areas of Kihei and Wailea in South Maui. These areas offer a range of accommodation options, from cozy condos to luxurious resorts, ensuring you'll find the perfect place to call home during your stay. Once you arrive at your accommodation, take some time to settle in and get ready for a fantastic day ahead. You can read more about where to stay in Maui here.

B. Beach Time: Choose Your Slice of Paradise

South Maui is known for its beautiful beaches, and depending on where you're staying, you'll have easy access to some of the best. Check out my article on the South Maui beaches for more info!

Here are a few options:

  1. Kamaole Beaches (1, 2, and 3): These three adjacent beaches in Kihei are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Each beach has its unique charm, so feel free to explore them all.

  2. Wailea Beach: Located in the upscale Wailea area, this beach is renowned for its golden sands and clear waters. It's a great place to relax and soak up the sun.

  3. Ulua Beach: Just south of Wailea Beach, Ulua Beach offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, making it a great spot to encounter marine life.

  4. Keawakapu Beach: This long sandy stretch is ideal for a leisurely walk along the shoreline or a refreshing dip in the ocean.

  5. Makena Beach (Big Beach): If you're looking for a stunning, undeveloped beach, Makena Beach, also known as Big Beach, is worth a visit. Please note that the waves can be powerful, so it's not recommended for swimming when conditions are rough.

If you are travelling with kids, check out my article on the best kid-friendly beaches.

D. Dinner Options: Local Food Trucks or MonkeyPod Kitchen

After a day of travel and beach exploration, you'll probably have worked up an appetite. For a casual and local dining experience, consider trying one of the many food trucks that are often found throughout South Maui. These mobile kitchens serve up a variety of tasty dishes, from fresh seafood to flavorful Hawaiian plate lunches.

If you're in the mood for something a bit more upscale, MonkeyPod Kitchen in Wailea is a great option. Known for its farm-to-table cuisine and craft cocktails, this restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

With your first day on Maui complete, you've already started to unwind and immerse yourself in the island's beauty. Tomorrow, we'll continue to explore the wonders of South Maui and make the most of your 5-day Maui adventure.

B. Morning Snorkel Tour to Molokini Crater & Turtle Town (With a Dash of Whale Watching)

  1. Molokini Crater: After a hearty breakfast, it's time to set sail for one of Maui's most famous snorkeling spots: Molokini Crater. This crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater is a haven for marine life, boasting crystal-clear waters and a stunning underwater landscape. On your snorkel tour, you'll have the opportunity to explore the vibrant coral reefs and swim among schools of tropical fish that call this unique ecosystem home.

The calm and clear waters of Molokini provide an ideal environment for snorkelers of all levels, from beginners to experienced underwater enthusiasts. The variety of marine species you'll encounter here is truly remarkable, from colorful reef fish to graceful manta rays. And if you're visiting during the whale season (typically from December to April), keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales breaching the surface in the surrounding waters. Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is a sight to behold.

  2. Turtle Town: After your adventure at Molokini, your snorkel tour will likely take you to another incredible location: Turtle Town. As the name suggests, this spot is famous for its resident Hawaiian green sea turtles. Snorkeling alongside these gentle giants is a truly magical experience that kids and adults alike will cherish. Marvel at their graceful movements and watch as they glide effortlessly through the crystal-clear water.

Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or it's your first time, the friendly crew members on your tour will provide you with the necessary snorkel gear and guidance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Lounging by the pool with a tropical drink in hand or basking on the warm sands of a Maui beach is the perfect way to recharge for the rest of your island exploration. Whether you choose to swim, read a book, or simply watch the waves roll in, this afternoon of relaxation is an essential part of your Maui vacation.

As you savor the tranquility of the afternoon, you'll likely find yourself reminiscing about the vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and the enchanting sea turtles you encountered during your snorkeling adventures in the morning. Stay tuned for Day 3, where we'll continue our exploration of this tropical paradise and discover more of Maui's hidden treasures.

Day 3: Haleakalā Adventure

See this content in the original post

A. Journey to the Top

Today, we're heading up a big volcano called Haleakalā. It's not an active volcano, so don't worry about any eruptions. The name Haleakalā means "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian, and it's a special place for watching the sunrise.

  1. Sunrise at Haleakalā (Early Start Needed): To see the sunrise, you'll have to wake up very early, around 3:30 AM. The drive from Kihei to the summit takes about one and a half hours, so plan ahead.

Many people want to see the sunrise, so it's a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time. When you reach the top, you'll watch the sun come up, painting the sky with beautiful colors. It's a magical sight and worth the early wakeup.

  2. Exploring Haleakalā After Breakfast: If you're not a morning person, that's okay! You can visit Haleakalā later in the day. After a relaxed breakfast, make your way up to the summit. From there, you'll have amazing views of the island.

B. Hiking and Food

Once you're at the summit, you have a few choices for what to do:

  1. Go Hiking: Haleakalā National Park has different hiking trails for all skill levels. These trails take you through some really unique landscapes, including the stunning Haleakalā Crater. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks, and carry water because there aren't any places to buy food in the park.

  2. Lunch or Dinner at Kula Bistro: Depending on how long your hike is and how hungry you are, you can eat at Kula Bistro on your drive back to South Maui. It's a nice place to have a meal and is well-known for its good food.

C. Bring Snacks

No matter when you go to Haleakalā, it's a good idea to bring some snacks for the car ride and your hike. There aren't any food places inside the park, so having snacks with you will keep you energized during your adventure.

As you explore Haleakalā and see its incredible landscapes, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for Maui's unique beauty. From lush forests to the rocky summit, Maui's diverse scenery will amaze you.

Stay tuned for Day 4, where we'll uncover more hidden gems on this beautiful island and continue to make great memories.

Day 4: Hana Highway Road Trip

See this content in the original post

A. Check Out of Your South Maui Accommodation

Before embarking on your exciting Hana Highway road trip, it's time to check out of your South Maui accommodation. Make sure you've packed all your belongings and are ready for a day of exploration along this iconic route. If you always have the option of doing this tour in one day and not staying overnight. It is a long day, but it’s your vacation so I am putting that option out there! If you are travelling with younger kids, I suggest staying overnight in Hana.

B. Journey Along the Famous Road to Hana

  1. Introduction to the Famous Road to Hana: Today, you're in for an adventure as you hit the famous Road to Hana. This legendary highway takes you on a scenic journey through lush rainforests, along rugged coastlines, and to some of Maui's most captivating scenery.

  2. If you are driving yourself, you can consider picking up a packed picnic lunch for the drive from the Hana Headquarters in Paia.

B. Recommended Stops along Hana Highway

Get ready to discover some incredible places along the way:

  1. Hookipa Lookout to View Sea Turtles: Your first stop is the Hookipa Lookout, where you can often spot sea turtles basking on the beach. These graceful creatures are a delight to watch as they relax in the sun.

  2. Twin Falls: A short hike will lead you to Twin Falls, a pair of picturesque waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery. It's a refreshing spot to cool off and take in the natural beauty.

  3. Garden of Eden: This is a great spot to have a picnic lunch. There are walking trails, look out spots, and all of the plant species are labelled so it is truly educational. Also, if you are a Jurassic Park fan, you will love the opportunity to see where the opening scene was filmed (when the helicopter flies to the island). There is an entry fee, but I found it to be worth the money and great place to stop.

  4. Wai'anapanapa State Park: This stunning park offers a black sand beach, volcanic caves, and a captivating coastline. Explore the lava tubes, take a dip in the ocean, and revel in the unique landscapes. You need a reservation to enter the state park.

  5. Hana Lava Tube: Explore the fascinating underground world of the Hana Lava Tube. Walk through these ancient tunnels and learn about the island's geological history.

C. Overnight Stay in Hana at the Hana Maui Resort

After a day of exploration along the Hana Highway, it's time to unwind and rest your weary feet. Check into the Hana Maui Resort for a comfortable overnight stay. This serene retreat in Hana offers a peaceful atmosphere and a chance to experience the quieter side of Maui.

Day 5: Exploring East Maui

A. Breakfast in Hana

Start your day with a delicious breakfast in Hana. Fuel up for more adventures as you plan your route back to Kahului.

B. Choosing Your Return Route

  1. The Same Route (Out and Back): You can choose to take the same route back to Kahului that you took to get to Hana. It's a familiar path with all the breathtaking sights you enjoyed on the way there.

  2. The "Back Way" in a Loop around Haleakalā: Another option is to take the "back way" in a loop around the Haleakalā volcano. However, be aware that this route is a local road and not as well maintained. It can be narrow and challenging for less confident drivers.

2. Haleakalā National Park, Pipiwai Trail, and Bamboo Forest

If you opt for the "back way," you'll have the opportunity to explore Haleakalā National Park and hike the enchanting Pipiwai Trail on the way. If you decide on the out and back, you can still head to the Pipiwai trail, it is not until after the entrance to this trail that the road is considered the “back road”. This trail takes you through a lush bamboo forest and leads to the magnificent Waimoku Falls. It's a nature lover's paradise and offers stunning photo opportunities. You can see some of mine in my article the #1 Maui Hike. This is my all-time favorite place on the island.

C. Dinner in Paia or Head Straight to the Airport

After your day of exploration, you can enjoy dinner in the charming town of Paia or head straight to the airport if your flight schedule requires it.

D. Overnight Stay in Paia or Kahului (Depending on Flight Schedule)

If your flight is the next day, consider staying overnight in Paia or Kahului. This will allow you to relax and reflect on your incredible Maui adventure before departing for your next destination.

As you wrap up your 5-day Maui itinerary, you'll have experienced the best that this tropical paradise has to offer. From snorkeling with sea turtles to exploring volcanic wonders and driving along the scenic Road to Hana, Maui has left its mark on your heart, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Optional Last Stop: Mama's Fish House

Before you wrap up your Maui adventure, consider making a special stop at Mama's Fish House, one of Maui's most renowned restaurants. Located on the north shore of the island, Mama's Fish House is famous for its fresh seafood and exquisite Hawaiian cuisine. If you have the time and appetite, indulge in a memorable dining experience that captures the essence of Maui's culinary delights.

Additional Tips and Considerations

As you prepare for your Maui adventure, there are some important tips and considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Let's delve into these practical aspects to make the most of your vacation.

A. Best Time to Visit Maui

Maui's pleasant weather makes it a great destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences:

  • Summer Months (June to August): This is the peak tourist season when the weather is warm and dry. It's perfect for beach lovers and water activities.

  • Whale Season (December to April): If you want to witness humpback whales, visit during these months. Maui offers some of the best whale-watching opportunities. Ocean conditions can be more unpredictable in the winter months, but Maui offers consistently beautiful temperatures year round, so you will still find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the pool and the beach!

  • Spring (April to May) and Fall (September to November): These shoulder seasons offer a nice balance between good weather and fewer crowds.

B. Renting a Car vs. Using Public Transportation

Having a rental car on Maui provides flexibility and allows you to explore the island at your own pace. While public transportation is available, it may not be as convenient for reaching remote or less touristy spots. If you plan to venture beyond the main tourist areas, renting a car is recommended. If you don't want to drive, you can take tours or hire a private guide to drive you to Hana & Haleakala. If you don't love to drive in the first place, this may offer you more opportunities to relax on your holiday.

C. Snorkel Gear and Guided Tours

  • Snorkel Gear: If you love snorkeling, consider bringing your own gear, like a mask, snorkel, and fins, to save money. However, if you don't have your gear, you can easily rent it from various shops and tour operators on the island.

  • Subscribe to the Snorkel Report to get daily information on snorkel conditions and the best beaches to visit.

  • Guided Tours: Maui offers a wide range of guided snorkel tours, making it easy to explore the underwater world. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, these tours often provide all the equipment you need, including flotation devices.

D. Maui Travel Tips and Packing Essentials

  • Pack Light: Maui's casual atmosphere means you can keep your packing light. Essentials include comfortable clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Check out my packing list here.

  • Travel Insurance: Consider travel insurance to protect your trip in case of unforeseen circumstances.

  • Cash and Cards: Carry both cash and credit cards, as some places may not accept cards, especially in remote areas.

E. Exploring Haleakalā National Park

  • Reservations: If you plan to visit Haleakalā for sunrise, make reservations up to 60 days in advance, as it's a popular attraction. You can make reservations through the National Park Service here.

  • If you book a tour, the tour operator will make the reservation on your behalf.

  • Dress Warm: The summit can be quite chilly, so bring layers of clothing to stay warm, especially for sunrise visits.

F. Enjoying Hawaiian Shave Ice at Ululani’s

Treat yourself to a delightful Hawaiian shave ice from Ululani's. It's a refreshing and colorful dessert made from finely shaved ice topped with flavored syrups. It's a favorite among locals and visitors alike, so don't miss this sweet Hawaiian experience. Want to know where to go for Ice Cream in Maui? Read this.

What is Hawaiian Shave Ice?

Hawaiian shave ice is a cool and tasty treat that's more than just a dessert—it's a favorite tradition in Hawaii. Imagine finely shaved ice piled up high in a cone or cup, like fluffy snow. What makes it super special are the colorful and delicious flavored syrups that get poured over the ice.

A Splash of Flavors and Colors

One of the great things about Hawaiian shave ice is all the different flavors you can choose from. There are classic flavors like cherry, grape, and blue raspberry, and also unique tropical ones like passion fruit, lychee, and guava. It's like a rainbow of tasty choices!

When you take a bite of shave ice, it's like a flavor explosion in your mouth. The syrups are made to taste just like the fruits and flavors they're named after. So, every spoonful is like a sweet and refreshing party for your taste buds.

A Local and Visitor Favorite

On the island of Maui, there's a special place called Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice that everyone loves. It's a family-owned business that cares a lot about making shave ice taste amazing. They use high-quality, all-natural syrups, so every bite is full of real flavor.

What makes Ululani's even more special is the warm and friendly way they welcome everyone. They greet you with big smiles and a lot of Aloha spirit. It's no wonder why Ululani's has become a favorite among both the people who live on Maui and those who come to visit.

Don't Miss Out on This Sweet Hawaiian Treat

No matter what you've been doing on Maui—whether you've been exploring Haleakalā, driving along the Road to Hana, or just enjoying your day—don't forget to treat yourself to some Hawaiian shave ice at Ululani's. It's a treat for your taste buds and a way to experience a special Hawaiian tradition.

As you enjoy each bite of shave ice, you're not just having a tasty dessert, but you're also taking part in something that's loved by the people of Hawaii. It's a sweet reminder that Maui is a place where simple pleasures, like having shave ice under the warm Hawaiian sun, turn into wonderful memories that stick with you long after your visit.

G. Visiting the North Shore and Great Spots for Fresh Fish

When you head to the North Shore of Maui, you'll find a calm and relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for unwinding. This part of the island is famous for its super-fresh fish, and you can have a great time exploring and trying out yummy seafood at the local restaurants. There are a couple of dishes you really shouldn't miss. First, there's "poke" (pronounced poh-kay), which is like a tasty bowl of fresh fish chunks mixed with delicious seasonings. It's a local favorite, and you'll see why when you taste it. Another treat to try is fish tacos—soft tortillas filled with freshly grilled fish and all sorts of yummy toppings. So, make sure you take a trip to the North Shore to relax, soak in the vibes, and savor some of the freshest fish dishes around.

H. Supporting Local Businesses and Food Trucks

Maui has a thriving community of local businesses and food trucks. Support these small businesses by trying out their offerings. You'll find a variety of culinary delights, from traditional Hawaiian dishes to international cuisine.

I. Staying Safe and Respecting Nature

While you're having a great time exploring Maui, it's important to stay safe and be kind to the beautiful natural world around you.

Sun Safety: The sun in Hawaii is strong, so it's smart to protect yourself. Wear sunscreen to keep your skin safe, put on a hat to shade your face, and don't forget sunglasses to shield your eyes. And don't forget to drink lots of water to stay cool and avoid getting too hot.

Respect Wildlife: Maui is home to some amazing creatures, but they need their space too. When you see animals, it's best to watch them from a distance. Getting too close can make them feel scared or stressed. Remember, the ecosystem in Hawaii is delicate, so it's super important to treat it gently.

Leave No Trace: When you're exploring the island, make sure to clean up after yourself. Take your trash with you and use designated paths so you don't harm the environment. Maui's natural beauty is a treasure, and by being careful, you help keep it that way.

And speaking of being careful, it's good to know that the area around Lahaina has been healing from wildfires. Right now, it's not open to visitors, so it's best to explore other parts of the island. It's a way to show respect for the places that need time to recover. Maui is full of incredible spots to discover, so you won't run out of amazing things to see and do while you're here.

By keeping these tips and considerations in mind, you'll be well-prepared for an unforgettable Maui vacation. Whether you're snorkeling with sea turtles, exploring volcanic landscapes, or savoring local cuisine, Maui's beauty and charm are sure to leave a lasting impression. Enjoy your time on the Valley Isle and create memories that will stay with you long after your journey comes to an end.
