It’s a paradise where adventure meets relaxation, making it the perfect playground for a family vacation. In this 7-day itinerary, we'll explore the natural beauty and exciting activities that Costa Rica has to offer, starting with arrival in San José International Airport, and ending at the beaches of Manuel Antonio. Day 1: Arrival and Exploration of San José

Our adventure begins at the San José International Airport, where the vibrant culture of Costa Rica greets you right from your first step. After picking up your rental car—a must for a flexible family trip—we head to our hotel in the heart of San José. Exploring the Heart of Costa Rica
San José, the capital city, offers a blend of history and modernity. Our first stop is the National Museum of Costa Rica. It's not just any museum; it's a fortress of history with bullet holes from civil wars past and gorgeous gardens. The exhibits here are interactive and cater wonderfully to curious young minds, making it an educational start to our trip.
For dinner, we stroll to a nearby restaurant that offers a mix of local and international dishes. Trying the national dish, casado, which includes rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a protein, is a must—it’s delicious and kid-approved! Casado literally means married in Spanish, and the dish is aptly named since it “marries” all the favorite foods into one delcious dish!
Overnight: San José
Travel Tip: The city is quite walkable, but keep an eye on little ones as the streets can be busy. A lightweight stroller or a baby carrier can be very helpful for younger children.
Day 2-3: Arenal Volcano National Park and La Fortuna
Day 2: Journey to La Fortuna
After breakfast, we set out for La Fortuna, a picturesque town known for its proximity to the Arenal Volcano. The drive takes about 3 hours but is filled with scenic views and quaint towns perfect for stretching your legs and grabbing fresh fruit from local vendors.
La Fortuna Waterfall
One of our first stops in La Fortuna is the breathtaking La Fortuna Waterfall. The descent to the waterfall involves about 500 steps, which are manageable for kids and lead to a refreshing natural pool. Swimming here is a fantastic experience—the cool water contrasts beautifully with the tropical heat.

Unwinding in Natural Hot Springs
In the afternoon, we indulge in the thermal waters of local hot springs. Many resorts offer day passes, which include access to mineral-rich pools of varying temperatures and stunning views of the volcano. It's a perfect setting for parents to relax and for kids to enjoy the novelty of swimming in warm waters. There are also a few local spots where you can access the hot springs without paying a resort, but if you are staying at a resort anyway, make sure to pick one with hot springs! There are lots of good options in La Fortuna.
Day 3: Adventure in Arenal
We start our day with a guided hike through Arenal Volcano National Park. The park’s trails are family-friendly, and the guides are fantastic at engaging children with educational talks about the volcanic landscape and wildlife.
Zip Lining: A Thrill for All Ages
In the afternoon, we head for an adrenaline-pumping zip lining session through the canopy. The zip lining tours here are designed for all ages, ensuring safety with thrilling glimpses of the forest below. As an alternative activity you could consider a horse back riding adventure, or spend another day at the resort hot springs and do a nighttime walk on the sloth trail!
Overnight: La Fortuna
Travel Tip: Pack a mix of swimwear, hiking gear, and comfortable clothes for the day. Also, early evenings are a great time for wildlife spotting, so a pair of binoculars can come in handy.
Day 4-5: Monteverde Cloud Forest
Day 4: Monteverde, A Mystical Cloud Forest
After breakfast, we start the 3-hour drive to Monteverde, known for its cloud forests and biodiversity. The roads to Monteverde are a bit rough, adding to the adventure, but the destination is well worth the journey. Make sure to check road conditions and ensure you have a plan in case of car trouble.
Suspended in the Clouds
At the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, we take a guided tour on the suspension bridges. Walking among the clouds, hearing the calls of exotic birds, while being surrounded by rainforest is surreal. The bridges are sturdy and safe, making them a hit with kids (and adults) who imagine themselves in a real-life enchanted forest.
Day 5: More Adventures and Coffee Delights
We kick off our morning with another adventure, - another ziplining tour for those who love the thrill or who maybe weren’t up for trying it last time, horseback riding, or a coffee tour —Monteverde offers some of the longest and most exciting zip lines in the country, off-the beaten path horseback riding, and exceptional coffee. There is also a lovely butterfly gardens and the Monteverde Orchid Garden are peaceful alternatives where you can witness the vibrant flora and fauna at a more leisurely pace.
Afternoon at a Coffee Plantation
No visit to Monteverde would be complete without a tour of a coffee plantation. Costa Rica's coffee is renowned worldwide, and the tours offer fascinating insights into coffee making, from bean to cup. Plus, the sampling of freshly brewed coffee is a delightful experience—the rich flavors are unmatched. If you can find one that also pairs it with chocolate tasting you will keep the kids happy too!
If you opted for the coffee tour in the morning, spend the afternoon doing a spa treatment, playing at the hotel pool, or head back to the cloud forest to do more wildlife spotting!
Overnight: Santa Elena, Monteverde
Travel Tip: The temperature in Monteverde can be cooler, especially in the evenings, so packing a light jacket or sweater is advisable. Also, most tours are less crowded in the early afternoon, making it a great time to explore.
Day 6-7: Relaxation and Wildlife at Manuel Antonio National Park
Day 6: Sun and Sea at Manuel Antonio
We leave the cool mountains for the warm coast as we drive to Manuel Antonio. This part of the trip takes us about 4 hours, heading back down towards the Pacific Ocean.
Beach Time
Upon arrival, we check into our beachfront hotel and waste no time heading to the sand and surf. Manuel Antonio's beaches are perfect for families—the waters are clear, and the waves are gentle enough for swimming. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and simply lounging by the sea are the order of the day.
Day 7: Exploring Manuel Antonio National Park
An early start gets us ahead of the crowds at Manuel Antonio National Park. The park is compact but rich in biodiversity. Guided tours are highly recommended as knowledgeable guides help spot sloths, monkeys, iguanas, and a variety of birds. The trails are well-maintained and manageable for children. If you pick the right place to stay there are also some amazing spots with their own hiking trails and guided tours.
A Relaxed Afternoon
After a morning of exploration, the rest of the day is free for last-minute beach time or souvenir shopping in local shops. It's a bittersweet farewell to the lush landscapes and warm waters of Costa Rica.
Return to San José
In the late afternoon, we drive back to San José, where our journey began. This is another 3-4 hours drive, so your departure time will depend on your flight time, you might spend another night in the city or head straight to the airport. A farewell dinner in San José, tasting yet another delicious local dish, is a fitting end to our Costa Rican adventure.
Travel Tip: Manuel Antonio can be very sunny and hot, so sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water are must-haves. For those flying out late, keeping an extra set of clothes handy in your daypack is a good idea after a day at the beach.
This itinerary gives you a little taste of what Costa Rica has to offer. It would also be quite enjoyable to increase your length of stay in each location to reduce your travel time and have more relaxation time! You could also just do two of the locations, and save the third for your next trip. You can’t do it all in 7 days, but it is enough time for your family to fall in love with Costa Rica, and create life-long memories together.

However, the rainy season (May to November) brings fewer tourists and lush landscapes, with mornings typically clear and rain in the afternoons, which can be a magical time for nature lovers to explore the lush rainforests and vibrant wildlife.
