Costa Rica in February: Why It's My Favorite Time to Visit!
In my experience, February is hands down one of the best months to visit Costa Rica. With warm weather, little rain, and tons of fun activities, this is peak travel time for good reason!
Why February is the Best Time of Year
February weather in Costa Rica hits that sweet spot—right in the middle of the dry season. You'll enjoy great weather, sunny days, and average temperatures comfortably hovering around the mid-80s (°F) along the entire Pacific coast. Daytime temperatures in the Central Valley, including San Jose, typically stay in the mid-70s, offering perfectly pleasant conditions for exploring.
This month also means dry air and fewer mosquitoes, making adventures even more enjoyable. Just be aware that the high season means peak season prices, so book accommodations and activities early to secure the best prices!
Best Places to Visit in February
Nicoya Peninsula and Guanacaste Province
My family loves the Nicoya Peninsula and Guanacaste Province in February. It’s one of the best places in Costa Rica for sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and plenty of family-friendly adventures. In fact, the entire Pacific coast shines in February, but the Nicoya region always feels extra special.
We typically start in Tamarindo, one of Costa Rica’s most vibrant beach towns. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a mix of surf, sand, and laid-back energy. Tamarindo has something for everyone—surf schools, great restaurants, and even turtle nesting tours at nearby Playa Grande. If you’re considering a stop here, check out my full post on exploring Tamarindo with kids.
Our favorite family-friendly place to stay in Tamarindo is The Coast Beachfront Hotel—it has suites with kitchens, a pool, and direct beach access. If you prefer something more upscale, Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas is gorgeous and tucked into nature just a short walk from the beach. The Tamarindo Diria Hotel is also amazing, and has a premium location in the centre of town. Check out my full post on where to stay in Tamarindo.
A short drive north takes you to Playas del Coco, a lively beach town that’s great for snorkeling, boating, and sunsets. It’s a good home base if you’re flying into Liberia, and there are plenty of accommodation options ranging from budget condos to beachfront resorts like Hotel Bosque del Mar.
This area is also a jumping-off point for exploring some of the best beaches in Costa Rica. Think powdery white sand, clear water, and palm-fringed coves. Beaches like Playa Conchal, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Avellanas are all stunning and easily accessible by car.
Don’t miss the chance to take a whale-watching tour if you’re in southern Nicoya—February is prime time for spotting humpback whales migrating along the Pacific. It’s one of those experiences that makes you stop and go, “Wow, this is what vacation dreams are made of.”

La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano National Park
February is also a fantastic time to visit La Fortuna, located in the middle of Costa Rica. The clear skies offer spectacular views of Arenal Volcano, and outdoor activities like hiking, ziplining, and hot springs visits are ideal during this time.
We loved staying at Hotel Los Lagos—it has its own hot springs, waterslides for the kids, and unbeatable volcano views. Another beautiful option is Nayara Gardens, perfect for couples or families who want a more luxurious stay surrounded by nature.
While in the area, don’t miss the hike at Arenal 1968 Trails or the hanging bridges at Mistico Park. The La Fortuna Waterfall is a must-see too (just be prepared for lots of steps!). After a long day of adventure, there’s nothing better than soaking in the natural hot springs—Tabacón and Ecotermales are our top picks.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Another one of my favorites is Manuel Antonio National Park. In February, this coastal paradise has dry weather and abundant wildlife sightings. Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds!
Stay at Hotel Costa Verde if you want jungle views and even a converted airplane suite that the kids will love. The park itself is famous for white-faced monkeys, sloths, and stunning beaches. It’s easy to spend an entire day hiking the trails and swimming in the turquoise waters.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Monteverde experiences some strong winds during February, but it's still a wonderful destination if you don’t mind a breeze. The dry season means clear skies, excellent birdwatching, and comfortable trails.
We stayed at Monteverde Inn for its nature trails and night walks, but Hotel Belmar is another great option with a cozy alpine vibe. Be sure to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve early in the day for the best wildlife sightings. Kids will also love the Butterfly Garden and the Bat Jungle.
South Pacific and Corcovado National Park
If you're looking for adventure, the South Pacific coast around Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park offers stunning biodiversity with fewer crowds. It’s also the season for turtle nesting on some southern beaches.
We booked a few nights at Aguila de Osa, an eco-lodge perched above the ocean that includes meals and guided hikes. The boat ride into Drake Bay is an adventure in itself! Corcovado is home to tapirs, scarlet macaws, and even pumas if you're lucky.
This area is less developed than other regions, which adds to the magic. February is ideal for snorkeling at Caño Island and hiking with a guide through the national park.
Caribbean Coast
February weather on the Caribbean coast can vary, but Puerto Viejo de Talamanca often enjoys sunny weather and lively cultural events. It’s one of the best things to experience during your visit.
Puerto Viejo is known for its Afro-Caribbean culture, colorful houses, and delicious food. We recommend staying at Hotel Aguas Claras for a chic beachside experience or Hotel Banana Azul if you are travelling without kids (this one is adults-only).
Rent bikes and explore nearby beaches like Playa Cocles and Playa Punta Uva, or visit the Jaguar Rescue Center to learn about local wildlife conservation efforts.
Festivals and Cultural Events
Late February is when Costa Rica celebrates some vibrant cultural events. Liberia Fiestas in Guanacaste Province are famous for bull riding, traditional food, live music, and sporting events. Another remarkable celebration is the Festival del Mar in Uvita, celebrating the ocean and marine conservation with lots of family-friendly activities. Rey Curre near the South Pacific region hosts colorful indigenous festivities that are fascinating to experience.
These festivals are a great way to experience local traditions and make your trip even more memorable. If your travel dates align, be sure to check local calendars and plan to attend one or two cultural events.
