Planning a Costa Rica family vacation is like stepping into a natural wonderland filled with pristine beaches, rain forests, and adventure at every turn. While Costa Rica’s most popular destinations like Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde Cloud Forest deserve their fame, venturing off the beaten path uncovers treasures that your entire family will remember forever.
In this guide, we’ll explore lesser-known but spectacular hidden gems, like La Leona Waterfall and Poza Los Coyotes, while offering tips and suggestions for every type of traveler—whether you have young kids, older kids, or are bringing family members of all ages. Pura Vida!

My Favorite Hidden Gems to Add to Your Itinerary:
1. La Leona Waterfall – A Jungle Waterfall Adventure
Located near the small village of Curubandé in Guanacaste, La Leona Waterfall is a true hidden gem perfect for adventurous families looking to escape the typical tourist trail. This activity offers a mix of adrenaline, exploration, and natural beauty, making it a memorable highlight of your Costa Rica family vacation.
What to Expect on the La Leona Waterfall Hike
The adventure begins with a 2.5-mile (4 km) round-trip trek through a lush tropical rainforest, with the journey being just as exciting as the destination. Here’s what your whole family can expect:
River Crossings: You’ll wade through shallow, crystal-clear rivers multiple times, so prepare to get wet! Water shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
Cave Exploration: The hike includes squeezing through narrow cave passages, adding an element of excitement for older kids and adventurous parents.
Natural Pools: Along the way, you’ll encounter turquoise pools perfect for a refreshing dip!
Final Climb: Reaching La Leona Waterfall involves climbing over rocks and swimming upcurrent while holding onto ropes for support. While manageable for kids ages 7+, this section does require caution. My personal opinion is that everyone should wear a PFD for this section, especially little ones. Your guide will carry these for you! Our guide shuttled our kids one at a time through this section, and my husband and I were fine on our own. Coming back with the current is easy-peezy.
The reward? A breathtaking view of the waterfall cascading into an awesome cave, surrounded by moss-covered rocks. The water is refreshingly cool—perfect for a swim after the hike!
Length: The guided hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours total, including stops for swimming, photos, and resting.
Difficulty: Moderate; it’s adventurous but suitable for families with kids aged 7 and up. They actual minimum age set up the tour operators is 4, and my son went at age 4. It depends on your little ones, but most 7 year olds would have a blast. If you have younger kids, I definitely recommend booking a private tour so you can go at your own pace.
Why Choose a Guided Tour?
While the trail itself isn’t that challenging, it is fun and scenic, a guided tour is mandatory to ensure safety and maximize the experience with the water crossings. It is also not a well-marked trail. Guides know the safest river crossings, help with tricky spots, and share fascinating facts about the local flora, fauna, and geological formations.
Top Tour Operators for La Leona Waterfall:
What to Bring:
Water shoes or sturdy sandals with straps (no flip-flops!)
Quick-dry clothing and swimsuits
A towel and change of clothes
Waterproof phone case or dry bag for belongings. The tour guide will also have these available.
Snacks and water (though some tours provide these)
Sunblock and bug repellent
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit La Leona Waterfall is during the dry season (December to April) when water levels are stable, and river crossings are safer. However, the rainy season (May to November) offers a different charm, with more lush greenery and fuller waterfalls—just be prepared for wetter conditions.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely! La Leona Waterfall is a great way to combine physical activity with exploration, and it’s a good option for families seeking something beyond the usual tourist attractions. The combination of rivers, caves, and waterfalls will leave your entire family with memories of an unforgettable jungle waterfall adventure.
Whether you’re hiking as a family, splashing in natural pools, or marveling at Costa Rica’s natural beauty, La Leona Waterfall delivers an extraordinary experience for families looking to embrace the “Pura Vida” lifestyle!
2. Poza Los Coyotes – The Great Spot for Swimming and Relaxation
If you’re looking for a great place to unwind away from the usual tourist crowds, Poza Los Coyotes in Guanacaste offers an incredible escape. Known for its blue swimming holes, shallow rivers, and hidden caves, this natural beauty spot is perfect for a laid-back Costa Rica family trip. Tucked off the beaten path, it’s an ideal day trip for families looking to relax, splash around, and explore in a serene natural setting. There are few amenities here, so make sure to pack a lunch and lots of water! This is a truly local experience that I highly recommend!
Getting There and Parking
Poza Los Coyotes is located near the village of Curubandé, just a 25-minute drive from Liberia, making it easily accessible for families staying in the surrounding area.
Parking: There’s a designated parking area near the entrance where visitors can leave their vehicles for a small fee (around $5 USD). Local family-run businesses often supervise the area, ensuring safety for your car. From the parking lot, it’s a short 5- to 10-minute walk to reach the first swimming spot.
How to Enjoy Poza Los Coyotes
Once you arrive, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore and unwind.
Swimming in the Pools: The natural swimming holes, fed by the blue spring water, are refreshing and calm. The pools range from shallow areas to deeper sections for confident swimmers. This is an entirely natural spot, so there are no steps, rails or other man-made tools to assist you with getting in and out of the water. There are some areas that are easier to get in, and others where you just need to jump onto your tube. It's great fun, but don't go expecting a stroller or mobility friendly entrance.
Inner Tube (Tire) Rentals: Enhance your visit by renting inner tubes (tire floats) from local vendors near the entrance. For just a few dollars, kids and adults can drift lazily down the river, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s the best way to enjoy the slow-moving current while staying cool under the warm sun. Once you have your floatation devices you walk upstream so you can float back down. You can also paddle against the current towards the waterfall and stop for a photo before floating back the way you came. You can't see the bottom of the pools, and the banks are quite soft so getting in and out of the pools isn't easy on anyone with mobility challenges.
Relaxing and Picnicking: The surrounding area offers several shaded spots where you can lay out towels or set up a picnic. Bring along some snacks, or purchase fresh fruit and treats like coconut water from local vendors near the entrance. It’s a great way to support the community while staying hydrated and refreshed.
What to Bring
Water shoes: Essential for navigating the rocky riverbed and exploring the caves.
Swimsuits and towels: You’ll want to spend a lot of time in the water.
Snacks and water: While there may be vendors nearby, it's not guaranteed, and bringing extra snacks is a good option for young kids.
Dry bag or waterproof phone case: Keep valuables safe from splashes.
Sunscreen and bug repellent: Stay protected while enjoying this natural beauty.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Poza Los Coyotes is during the dry season (December to April) when the river is calm and the waters are crystal clear. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying cooler temperatures. During the rainy season (May to November), the water levels may rise slightly, but the pools and caves remain accessible, offering a more vibrant, lush rainforest backdrop.
Why Families Love Poza Los Coyotes
Poza Los Coyotes offers a peaceful and fun-filled experience that’s perfect for families of all ages. The whole family can float in inner tubes, explore caves, or splash in shallow pools, while parents can appreciate the stunning natural beauty and the low cost! It’s an affordable and family-friendly escape that’s still close enough to Liberia for a comfortable travel day.
Whether you’re seeking a quiet break from the hustle of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations or simply want to enjoy a laid-back day immersed in nature, Poza Los Coyotes is a great spot that offers something for the entire family. 4. Rio Celeste – The Magical Blue River
Hidden within the lush landscapes of Tenorio Volcano National Park, Rio Celeste is a true natural wonder and one of Costa Rica's most stunning natural sights. Known for its unreal, electric-blue waters, this enchanting river looks like something out of a fantasy movie, making it a favorite place for photographers, hikers, and nature lovers. The vivid blue hue of the river is the result of a fascinating natural chemical reaction, where volcanic minerals in the water reflect sunlight to create its surreal color. This might be my favorite waterfall on planet earth.
What to Expect When Visiting Rio Celeste
Visiting Rio Celeste is more than just seeing the blue river—it’s about immersing yourself in the beauty of Costa Rica’s tropical rainforest. Here’s what families can expect:
The Hike:
The hike to Rio Celeste is a 4.5-mile (7 km) round-trip trail through the dense, vibrant rainforest of Tenorio Volcano National Park. The trail takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on how often you stop for photos or breaks.
The terrain is moderately challenging, with some muddy and slippery sections, especially during the rainy season. Families with older kids will find it manageable, but young children may need some help along the way.
Key sights along the trail include:
Los Teñideros: The spot where two rivers merge, creating the electric-blue color—a fascinating phenomenon to see.
The Waterfall: One of the most iconic sights of Rio Celeste is the stunning blue waterfall cascading into a turquoise pool below. This is a perfect spot for photos, though swimming is not permitted to protect the natural habitat.
Suspension Bridges: As you hike, you’ll cross small bridges offering picturesque views of the river winding through the jungle.
Hot Springs and Fumaroles: Geothermal activity in the park creates small bubbling pools and hot spots along the trail, showcasing the volcanic power of the area.
The Best Option for Visiting:
To see Rio Celeste at its most vibrant, the best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April). During this period, clear skies and stable water levels ensure the river retains its iconic blue color.
In the rainy season (May to November), heavy rainfall can stir up sediment, making the water appear murkier. However, the lush, green surroundings during this season create a magical atmosphere, and the park will have fewer crowds.
Family-Friendly Tips for Rio Celeste:
Wear the Right Gear: Bring sturdy hiking shoes, especially if visiting during the rainy season, when the trail can get muddy. Water-resistant clothing, a rain jacket, and a dry bag for your belongings are also essential.
Pack Snacks and Water: While food isn’t allowed inside the park to protect the ecosystem, you can enjoy snacks at the park entrance before or after your hike.
Minimum Age: Due to the trail’s moderate difficulty, Rio Celeste is best suited for families with older kids (ages 6 and up) who can manage longer hikes.
Hire a Guide: A guided tour is the best way to fully appreciate Rio Celeste. Guides share fascinating information about the river, its formation, and the surrounding wildlife, including howler monkeys, tropical birds, and even the occasional three-toed sloth.
Practical Information:
Location: Rio Celeste is located in Tenorio Volcano National Park, about a 1.5-hour drive from La Fortuna and 2 hours from Liberia International Airport.
